HVAC & Plumbing Myths, BUSTED!

We get a lot of questions from our customers in regards to their HVAC and plumbing systems.

“Do I need to schedule maintenance? My system is running fine.”

“Can I use a store-bought drain cleaner if I have a clogged drain?”

“What temperature should I set my thermostat at to cool my home down quicker?”

Many, if not all, of the questions we hear, are misconceptions and myths — and we want to set the record straight once and for all! We hope knowing the answers to the following questions will help give you a better idea of the proper maintenance needed to help your HVAC and plumbing systems last for years to come.

Common HVAC Myths
“If I have a bigger AC unit, I’ll have better results!”

Bigger isn’t necessarily better where your AC is concerned. Each home size is different and thus has different needs concerning cooling systems. If you choose a system that’s too large, it’ll cycle on and off more frequently — using excessive energy. On the other hand, if your system is too small, it can easily be overworked — shortening the lifespan of the unit. Pro tip: Call a professional to assess your home’s needs to ensure you are choosing the appropriately sized system.

“I don’t need maintenance; my system is running perfectly fine.”

Just like your car needs routine maintenance to run in tip-top shape, your HVAC system is no different. Annual tune-ups help identify small issues that can be fixed before causing significant damage. This not only enables you to save money but also works to lengthen the life of your system.

“To reduce energy bills, we should close vents in rooms we’re not using.”

Sounds logical, right? Unfortunately, in doing so, you’ll cause an imbalance in the air flow and pressure. This puts added strain on your system, reducing energy efficiency. This can also cause leaks at the vent seams! Instead, if you’re looking to isolate areas of your home, consider installing a zoned system or ductless system to cool specific rooms.

“If I set my thermostat really low, I’ll cool down the house quicker.”

Negative. Regardless of the temperature you’ve set, your system will cool down your home at the same speed. So no need to turn it down to 55 degrees in hopes you’ll reach 70 degrees sooner!

Common Plumbing Myths
“A small faucet drip is annoying, but isn’t a major issue.”

Sure, maybe you’ll get used to the “drip-drip-drip” sound, but eventually, the problems that arise will be hard to ignore. Leaks can waste more than one trillion gallons of water each year — resulting in higher bills and wasted resources. Plus, a leaky faucet could be the sign of something a bit more troublesome. Getting it fixed ASAP can potentially save your home from some severe water damage.

“If I have scraps left from a meal, I can just toss them down the garbage disposal for quick cleanup.”

While yes, you can put anything down your disposal, that doesn’t mean you should. Some items should be avoided at all costs; otherwise, you may face some serious consequences. This includes grease, stringy foods, bones, fruit pits, egg shells, etc.

“Store-bought drain cleaners are great for clogs!”

Not exactly. These cleaning solutions may temporarily solve your drain clog problem, but ultimately they’re just prolonging an issue. Store-bought solutions contain corrosive chemicals that can do a number on your pipes over the years, plus any surrounding surface if spilled. Instead, try a vinegar and baking soda solution or a plunger — then contact your local drain cleaning experts here at Essig.

“It’s ok to pour hot grease down the drain since it’s liquid.”

Never! Grease is one of the biggest threats to your sewer and drain system. Despite being in liquid form when poured into the drain, once cool, it becomes solid. Over time, this can lead to some nasty blockages! Instead, pour grease into a separate container and throw it away later.
