Leaks typically mean you will need a replacement
A customer noticed that his 50-gallon water heater was leaking. There are a number of things that could cause your water heater to leak. Sometimes it could be fixed with minor repairs, and other times you may need to replace the whole water heater. Either way, a leak should be taken seriously because it could cause severe damage to your property and become very costly.
What causes water heaters to leak?
It could be something very simple like condensation or loose drain valves, or something more serious like corrosion or leaks in the pipes.
Condensation is a less serious form of “leaking” since it is not really a leak. This usually happens when the water entering the heater is cold. As the water heats up, the condensation will go away on its own.
Loose drains valves are something that is very easy to fix. The valves act like a faucet at the bottom of the water heater and all you have to do is tighten them.
Corrosion, however, is a more serious problem. As with any household appliance after many years of usage, parts begin to deteriorate and corrode. The metal part of the tank will start to break down and there will be leaks in those areas. Usually corrosion is what requires a new heater because, at that point, it’s beyond repair.
In this customer’s case, one of their options was to install a new 50-gallon Bradford White electric water heater. Their old water heater was getting up there in age – and had a leak – so it was time to get a new one. Updating their water heater will save them more money in the end by eliminating the possible risk of damage to their house, and saving them from constantly dishing out money in repair costs.
