Signs to Look For
Thick Ice Forms on the Heat Pump in the Winter
A thin coat of ice on the pump is nothing to worry about. The heat pump has a defroster that will occasionally start and melt the thin frozen layer. But, if you see a thick coat of ice on the coils or over the whole unit, this can cause damage. Usually, the pump is made to shut down if it gets too much ice on it.
However, it is possible that your heat pump’s defroster is not working properly, that the fan might not be working correctly. It could also be the reverse valve or other lingering problems. No matter the severity of the case, you should shut off the heat pump and call a maintenance technician to look at it right away.
The Heat Pump Has Ice on it in Summer
If you find Ice on the heat pump in the summertime, that is always an indication of a problem. In fact, it could be due to dirty coils, an air filter that has clogged, or a leak of the refrigerant. Don’t use the unit until it is looked at by a professional. Running it in this condition could permanently ruin the system, which will result in the need to have it replaced.
Constant Cycling On and Off
If the heat pump has short cycles that make it turn on and off constantly, it can cause the unit to overheat. This could be caused by the thermostat, the filter being clogged, the blower not working, or a damaged heat anticipator. If this is the case, have it looked at as soon as possible by a professional.
Your Heat Pump is Noisy
Any noises that are unusual for your heat pump need to be looked at immediately. Sounds to listen for are screeching, buzzing, rattling, or grinding, to name a few.
Your Heat Pump Is Not Blowing Air
Look at the fan switch on the thermostat. Turn it to “Auto” or “Off” and see if that helps. If not, there may be a problem in the limit switch or the plenum, which is supposed to move the heated air to the ducts. It could also be that the belt is broken.
Your Utility Bills Are Going Up
Your heat pump needs regular maintenance to keep it working properly and efficiently. If your utility bills are getting higher each month, you may need to have your unit serviced; it will save you money in the long run.
Filter Problems
If the airflow from the heat pump is weak, or if your indoor air quality seems to be reduced, a clogged or dirty air filter could be the cause. It would be best if you looked at your filter every 30 days — and if it is dirty, it is time to replace it.
Constantly Tripping the Breaker
If your unit is tripping the circuit breaker frequently, don’t just let it run its course. Turn it off and have it looked at by a service professional so that you don’t damage it.
